Danube River
The chemical accident, which occurred on Monday at an aluminum plant 165 kilometers west of Budapest, is the largest of its kind in Hungary's history, having already killed four people and threatening to contaminate the Danube River.
Greenpeace is calling the spill "one of the top three environmental disasters in Europe in the last 20 or 30 years."
Although the contaminants have reached a branch of the 1,775-mile-long river, a Hungarian emergency official, Tibor Dobson, said that no immediate damage was evident. The sludge previously hit the Raba and Mosoni-Danube rivers with no biological effects as of yet. However, experts say dying fish could be evident in the future.
